Samuel Goldfus from Russia to Pennsylvania

On 2 June 1900 census of Philadelphia Ward 4, Pennsylvania was Samuel Goldfus 38 b: abt 1862 in Russia who immigrated in 1887. With him was his wife Esther 38, born 1862 but immigrated later in 1891 from Russia. They had six children: Freda b: 1884 Russia, Abraham b: 1886 Russia, Sarrah b: 1888 Russia, Goldie b: 1893 Pennsylvania, Louis b: 1896 Pennsylvania, and Bennie b: 1899 Pennsylvania. It seems like Freda age 16 on the census of 1 June 1900 was in the Pennsylvania Hospital Ward 7 as a patient. Hopefully she had just got out the next day to be on the next census. Her parents' names were not listed in the hospital, but I believe it's the same person.

On the 1910 census of Philadelphia Ester age 48 is listed as head of the house. Daughter Freddia age 26 b: Russia is married to Charles Kahn age 29 b: NY with grandson Robert Kahn age 4 b: Penn. Her son Abe 24 b: Russia, daughter Sarah age 21 b: Russia, Goldie 17 b: Penn., Louis age 13 b: Penn, Bennie age 11 and Berly age 9 all born in Penn were living with her. Possibly Sam had died.

Joseph Goldfus from Russia to Pennsylvania

On the 1 June 1900 census of Philadelphia, Ward 3, Pennsylvania was Joseph Goldfus b: 1871 in Russia age 28 and a tailor who immigrated in 1898. He was with his wife Mary age 27 born June 1872 in Poland who immigrated before in 1892. I am presuming that they met here in the USA. They had three small children: Sarah age 3 b: abt 1897 in Pennsylvania, Joseph age 2 b: 1898, and Bessie age 1 b: 1899.

Again on the 1910 census of Philadelphia was Joseph b: Russia b: 1874 age 36 with wife "May or Mary b: 1875 " b: Russia age 35, Sarah b: 1898 12, Abraham b: 1899 11, and Fredia b: 1906 age 4 all born in Pennsylvania. The parents seem to check, but Abraham is listed instead of Joseph, and Bessie is not listed. Joseph's birtdate is off by 3 years also. Could this be a different Joseph and Mary from Russia?

On the 1920 census Joseph Goldfuss was in Philadelphia, Ward 1, Pennsylvania at age 50. He was born in 1870 in Russia. He immigrated in 1890. His wife Mary was born in 1894 in Russia. Both were Jewish. They were renting. Their children were: Freda age 13 born in Pennsylvania. Morris Picon was a son-in-law age 25 also born in Russia and married to their daughter, Sarah age 22 who was born in Pennsylvania. This means they immigrated before 1900, and as they said, 1890. Frances Picon, their child was age 2 and was born in New York. Charles Shapiro, a boarder age 33 was a physician with NA 1907. Here, Joseph was a tailor in a clothing shop. They lived in a Jewish neighborhood. This agrees with the 1900 census with Sarah as a child of theirs and that he was a tailor.

Joe Goldfus from Russia to Minnesota

On the 12 June 1900 census was the merchant Joe Goldfus age 35 b: 1865 in Russia who immigrated in 1883 with wife Annie age 28 also born in Russia in 1872 with son Samuel age 7 b: 1893 in Minnesota. Hyman age 6 b: 1894, Ida age 4 b: 1896, Charles age 2 b: 1898. With them was Joe's brother Harris age 40 also born in Russia who was listed as a goods peddler. These people were all in Minneapolis Ward 3, Hennepin, Minnesota. Though they were from Russia, nothing said anything about being or speaking Yiddish.

Then on the 13 January 1920 US Federal census Joseph Goldfus, born in Russia, was in Minneapolis, Hennepin, Minnesota at age 55 owning his own hme with wife Ann J. also born in Russia and age 49. They spoke Yiddish. Living with them were their children, Sam age 27 a shoe salesman, Hyme age 26 a flour mill price clerk, Charles age 22 a salesman at the electric company and Rose age 17. The parents immigrated in 1890 according to this census.

Goldfoots from findmy past

The following Goldfoots were found on findmy past from England. The site was sent to me from researcher Mike Posnick who has a Goldfus ancestor.
1. Lina Goldfoot b: 1862
2. Mr. S. Goldfoot b: 1872
3. Abraham Goldfoot b: 1868
4. Rachel Goldfoot b: 1875
5. Sarah Goldfoot b: 1853 married.
6. Nathan Goldfoot b: 1871 (in all likelihood my grandfather)

Nathan Goldfoot, possible Grandfather

I found a Nathan Goldfoot on findmypast.com who left Londonderry, which is now a port in Ireland in 1893 destined for Quebec, Canada at the age of 22. That means he was born in 1871, which is three years off of my 1874 figures. He was a farm laborer.

Family Tree DNA Test on Two Goldfoots

Two Goldfoot males are doing a 25 marker DNA test now to see if we are related. You may go to:
http://www.familytreedna.com/public/Goldfoot to see results which should be in about a month from now. Since our original name must have been Goldfus, people with that surname would be interested in the results and possible testing also.

Update: Yes, there was a difference of one. We are connected but back maybe to the 16th century without hard evidence of paper. It's pretty exciting.
